The ‘FemPower!’ project was a youth exchange, held in Birmingham (UK) from the 16th until the 23rd August 2018 with 40 participants from the UK, Italy, Poland, Spain, Greece, Bulgaria and Lithuania.
The project helped European youth to learn about and become promoters of gender equality on local, national and international scale. It also highlighted to young people the benefits of equality, whilst ensuring the inclusion of female participants from disadvantaged backgrounds. The project’s contents were highly participant-centered, discussing their individual experiences and allowing them to analyse the different forms of gender discrimination across Europe. On their return, participants are expected to undertake their own change-making campaigns either individually or with their national group.
Returning from this beautiful adventure, our Italian participants – all from Tusa, have written their own reflections about the project and what they have learnt to grow.
MARIA LUCIA BELLONE
Quando mi chiedono di parlare del mio Erasmus+ a Birmingham conclusosi qualche giorno fa, non so da dove cominciare per esprimere quanto sia stato bello, formativo e soprattutto indimenticabile. Prima di tutto il tema del progetto ovvero “FEMpower”, che trattava della parità dei sessi e della condizione sociale della donna attualmente, è stato svolto in maniera impeccabile, discusso in tutte le sue sfaccettature.
Abbiamo avuto la possibilità di confrontarci con ragazzi provenienti da altri sei paesi dell’UE (Bulgaria, Polonia, Lituania, Grecia, Spagna e UK), venire a conoscenza di realtà diverse dalla nostra e nel nostro piccolo cercare soluzioni a questi problemi. Abbiamo anche avuto l’onore di incontrare il Lord Mayor di Birmingham e uno dei suoi consiglieri, due donne forti, indipendenti che hanno dovuto lottare contro diverse discriminazioni per arrivare dove sono ora.Personalmente ho trovato nelle loro parole grande motivazione e mi sono sentita orgogliosa di essere donna. Soprattutto grazie a questo progetto ho avuto l’occasione e il privilegio di conoscere persone meravigliose, che porterò sempre nel mio cuore, ragazzi come me con la voglia di scoprire, viaggiare e contribuire alla crescita della nostra società.
Mi sono sentita come all’interno di una grande e bellissima famiglia in cui ognuno veniva accettato e valorizzato per la sua diversità.
Non dimenticherò mai questa esperienza che spero sia la prima di una lunga serie.

When they ask me to talk about my ERASMUS+ in Birmingham ended a few days ago, I don’t know where to start to express how beautiful it was, formative and above all unforgettable. First of all, the theme of the project “FEMpower”, which talked about gender equality and the social condition of woman at the moment, was carried out in an impeccable manner, discussed in all its facets.
We had the opportunity to comparate ourself with guys from other EU countries (Bulgaria, Poland, Lithuania, Greece, Spain and UK) to learn about different situations from our own and in our small way to find solutions to these problems. We had also the honor of meeting the Lord Mayor of Birmingham and one of her counselor, two strong, independent women who have had to fight against various discrimination to get where they are now. Personally, I found in their speeches a big motivation and I felt proud to be a woman.
Mostly thanks to this project I had the privilege of meet wonderful people, that I’ll always carry in my heart, guys like me with the desire to discover, travel, and contribute to the grouth of our society.
I felt like I was inside a beautiful and big family where everyone was accepted and valued for its diversity.
I’ll never forget this experience and I hope will be the first of a long series.

Esperienza veramente emozionante e soprattutto importante visto la tematica affrontata che purtroppo ancora oggi persiste. Ho appreso molto dalle differenti culture e tradizioni grazie ad un ottimo gruppo di ragazzi, inoltre ho avuto anche l’opportunità di migliorare il mio inglese. Spero di partecipare presto ad altri progetti.
A truly emotional experience and, above all, important because of the issue addressed that unfortunately still persists today. I learned a lot from different cultures and traditions thanks to an excellent group of guys, I also had the opportunity to improve my English.
I hope to participate soon in other projects.
SARA GLORIOSO:
Questa mia prima esperienza con Erasmus+ ha arricchito il mio bagaglio culturale perché ho avuto modo di approfondire una delle tematiche più dibattute in questi ultimi anni, quale la discriminazione di genere. Inoltre attraverso le attività e i giochi organizzati ho avuto modo di relazionarmi con ragazzi di altri paesi con costumi, lingua e tradizioni differenti. Consiglierei questa esperienza a chiunque perché permette di aprirsi verso nuovi orizzonti, abbattendo ogni tipo di diversità.
This first experience with Erasmus+ has enriched my cultural background because I was able to deepen one of the most debated issues in recent years, such as gender discrimination. Furthermore, through organized activities and games I have had the opportunity to relate with young people from other countries with different customs, language and traditions. I would recommend this experience to anyone because it allows you to open up to new horizons, breaking down every kind
of diversity.

Questa mia prima esperienza è stata significativa non potrei mai dimenticare le persone con le quali ho vissuto dei momenti davvero fantastici. Lo scopo del progetto è stato ben rispettato, c’è stata anche una grande collaborazione tra i vari paesi e abbiamo trattato argomenti delicati e importanti riguardanti le donne in maniera approfondita e toccante.
Il cibo e il tempo libero a disposizione sono stati un punto debole in quanto, non sono stati abbastanza. Per il tempo libero infatti abbiamo potuto vedere poco della città, sia Birmingham che Londra 🙁
This first experience was significant I could never forget the people with whom I lived really fantastic moments. The purpose of the project was well respected, there was also a great collaboration between the various countries and we treated sensitive and important subjects concerning women in a deep and touching way.
The food and leisure time available were a weak point, as they were not enough. In fact, a lot of work and little freetime, we didn’t see much of Birmingham or London :(.

Nei giorni tra il 16 e il 23 agosto ho avuto l’opportunità di prendere parte ad scambio giovanile il cui nome era FemPower. Questo progetto è stato per me molto importante perchè si è trattato un argomento ormai all’ordine del giorno nella nostra società come la parità di genere, ho avuto l’opportunità di confrontarmi con ragazzi di diverse provenienze e inoltre proprio con questi ragazzi ho avuto la possibilità di stringere nuove e belle amicizie sia attraverso le attività svolte durante il progetto sia durante le serate passate insieme. È stata per me una bellissima esperienza formativa, consiglio questo tipo di scambio a chiunque voglia fare nuove esperienze culturali.

From 16 to 23 August I had the opportunity to take part in a youth exchange whose name was FEMpower. This project was very important for me because it was a current topic in our society such as gender equality, I had the opportunity to compare myself with guys from different backgrounds and also with these guys I had the possibility of making new and beautiful friendships both through the activities carried out during the project and during the evenings spent together. It was a wonderful training experience for me, I recommend this type of exchange to anyone who wants to make new cultural experiences.

Per me è la prima volta che partecipo a uno Scambio Giovanile. Un esperienza bellissima per tanti motivi.
Aver visitato un posto per me nuovo, aver incontrato persone nuove di paesi diversi con cultura diversa. Ho avuto anche la possibilità di confrontarmi con loro, e in particolare averlo fatto parlando inglese. Questo progetto mi ha dato l’opportunità di migliorare la lingua inglese e arricchire il mio bagaglio culturale.
For me it is the first time that I participate in a Youth Exchange project. A beautiful experience for many reasons.
Having visited a new place for me, meeting new people from different countries with different cultures. I also had the opportunity to confront myself with them, and in particular I did so by speaking English. This project gave me the opportunity to improve the English language and enrich my cultural background.
